What is Fascia?

Fascia is like a spider web. It is a stringy tissue that is densely woven throughout your muscles, nerves, organs, arteries, veins and bones. The fascia tissue is one continuous structure throughout your body and holds everything in place. That is why if there is a snag or stretching in the tissue, it can cause pain in another body part that is connected to the fascia line.

Fascia is strong. It provides structural support and protects your muscles. Normally, fascia is flexible, stretchy and wants to move in all directions without any restrictions. When there is trauma in the tissue, lack of hydration, the fascia looses it's flexibility. It gets dry, brittle and more rigid. The tightness and adhesions can lead to pain, and loss of mobility, which can affect your quality of life.

What is Myofascial Realease?

"Myo" means muscle and "fascia" is a strong and dense connective tissue made up of collagen and elastin. It covers and supports the muscles throughout your body. During the treatment myofascia release focuses on treating and hydrating the fascia tissue by applying gentle to firm pressure to stretch, and release any adhesions or knots in the fascia tissue. Myofascial release focuses more on the fascia tissue and its connections rather than the muscle itself.

Myofascial release is a technique that uses direct contact with the skin with little to no oil in order to feel the tightness in the fascia. The pressure is applied slowly in attempt to stretch and lengthen the fascia tissue. You may feel a tug of the skin, electricity, or burning senstion when severe adhesions are found in the fascia. This is completely normal. Myofascial release also activates muscle spindles, which send sensory information to the spinal cord. The spinal cord then regulates muscle contraction to ensure optimal length and tension for movement and stability.

Myofascial release is beneficial for anyone who has suffered from any injury, has mobility restrictions, poor posture, and chronic pain.

Contraindications For Lymphatic Massage

General Contraindications: Whole Body

- Decompensated Cardiac Insufficiency: The heart is unable to pump blood effectively, making MLD unsafe.
- Cardiac Edema: Swelling caused by heart issues that could worsen with lymphatic stimulation.
- Congestive Heart Failure: Increased lymph flow may overburden the heart.
- Acute Inflammation (Pathogenic Germs): Includes infections caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses. MLD could
spread pathogens, increasing the risk of blood poisoning (sepsis).
- Renal Failure: The kidneys cannot process the increased fluid load resulting from MLD.
- Acute Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Risk of dislodging a blood clot, leading to potentially life-threatening
complications such as a pulmonary embolism.

Relative Contraindication
Proceed with caution and only with medical supervision:
- Malignant Disease: MLD may increase circulation, potentially affecting the progression of certain cancers.

Contraindications for Neck Treatment
- Overactive Thyroid Function: Risk of releasing thyroid hormones into the bloodstream too rapidly.
- Overly Sensitive Carotid Sinus: Could cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure or heart rate due to
overstimulation of pressure-sensitive nerve endings in the carotid bifurcation.
- Cardiac Arrhythmia: Stimulation of the vagus nerve in the neck may trigger heart failure in some cases. Relative Contraindication
- Elderly Patients (Over 60): Consult the referring physician before treating older clients. Age-related arteriosclerosis in the neck vessels may increase sensitivity to pressure, and there is a risk of dislodging
deposits, potentially causing a stroke.

Contraindications for Abdomen Treatment

- Pregnancy: Stimulating lymph flow in the abdomen is unsafe for expectant mothers.
- Menstruation: Abdominal MLD may increase bleeding and discomfort during the menstrual cycle.
- Seizure Disorders (e.g., Epilepsy): Hyperventilation triggered by the treatment may provoke seizures.
- Blocked Intestine (Ileus): MLD could worsen an already critical condition.
- Intestinal Diverticulosis: Risk of further irritation or complications.
- Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: Avoid post-surgical or untreated aneurysms due to the risk of complications.
- Severe Arteriosclerosis: Common in metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus, this condition may lead to
vessel damage or plaque dislodgement.
- Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (e.g., Colitis Ulcerosa, Crohn’s Disease): Increased lymphatic activity may
exacerbate symptoms.
- Pronounced Abdominal Adhesions: Often a result of surgical intervention, adhesions may limit safe MLD
application.
- Post-Radiation Therapy Changes: Conditions such as radiation cystitis or radiation colitis make abdominal
treatments unsafe.
- Pelvic Deep Vein Thrombosis: Increased lymph flow could mobilize clots, leading to severe complications

Wood Therapy FAQs

How often can I get a treatment? And maintenace?

Treatments can be done several times a week for over 3-4 months. Ideally, you want to give the body at least 3 days in between sessions. 1-2 sessions per month for maintenace once you have achieved your desired goal.

When will I see results?

Results are typical right from the first session and a minimum of 6-12 initial treatments is recommended for full results. Normally, treatments are performed several times a week for many weeks to see the full benefits. Results can vary from person to person.

How long do the results of wood therapy last?

Many report results lasting up to a few months after the completion of their last treatment. However, maintenance treatments are necessary to keep the results you have achieved. Wood therapy only gives temporary results. The more consistent you are with it, the better your results will be and the longer they will last.
